Detox the Healthy Way

Time to Detox

Do you feel sluggish, tired? Have you been over-indulging on alcohol and too rich, processed foods? Or do you have skin problems? Now is a great time to have a detox, assisting your body to cleanse itself of metabolic by-products and toxins.

Not a Mono-diet

Juice diets and mono-diets however would make things worse and cause the well known "detox symptoms". The reason behind this is that our body needs a substantial amount of bulk (fibre) for proper elimination of the toxins accumulating in our bowel, and the liver also needs fibre and good fats to be able to release bile, the only way most toxins can be eliminated from the liver.

Nutrients Help Detoxification

The liver itself needs lots of nutrients for the two step detoxification process, and heaps of antioxidants to mop up the created free radicals, which come from a well balanced diet. Herbal supplements are a good addition, but not replacement for a good detox diet.

Before you jump into any new diet regime, it is important to find any underlying problems. It is also important to find out if you have an obstracted bile duct or gallstones by asking for an ultra-sound check-up from your GP.

The Right Detox

Eat Naturally During Detox

A variety of colourful vegetables. Consume foods in as close to their natural state as you can.

The first step in supporting our liver is to releive it from some of its day to day jobs, so avoid taking in any substances which will contribute to the body's toxic load. This means staying away from alcohol, sugar and processed foods in general for at least 4 weeks. Try to eat as naturally as possible, consuming foods in as close to their natural state as you can. Buy organic wherever possible to reduce the intake of chemicals.

Tofu, quinoa, greens, with beetroot salad Concentrate on plant proteins that are high in fibre such as tofu and quinoa.

Eat Plant Protiens

Avoid foods which are generally hard to digest for 2 weeks, such as meats, and concentrate on plant proteins high in fibre to assist elimination: beans, tofu, quinoa and wholegrains mixed with nuts and seeds. Eating regularly is important to balance blood sugar levels (preventing energy fluctuations) and avoid cravings for carbohydrates and sweet things.

Drink Water While Detoxing

Hydrating our body is always important, but during detox diets we need even more liquids to flush out the water soluble toxins. Consume at least two litres of filtered water throughout the day.

Avoid fizzy- sugary drinks, coffee and black tea, which are hindering the liver detoxification pathways. Drink green tea instead throughout the morning, it will support the process and gives you long lasting energy, along with much needed antioxidants. Experiment with herbal teas. Nettle and dandelion with a few drops of fresh lemon juice are particularly good for de-toxing. Rooibos has a similar taste to ordinary tea and is full of antioxidants.

Exercise During Detox

Lifestyle change is just as important as diet in assisting the detoxification process. Gentle, regular exercise is important to boost circulation, metabolism and release mood-lifting endorphins – which all contribute to a healthier, happier you.

Taking Epsom salt baths, alternating warm-cold showers and dry skin brushing from toe to top all assist the detoxification, and help to make your skin wonderfully soft.

Sleep

Last, but not least, getting enough sleep is also key to good health and healing. When you are at rest, your liver is working overtime and your body is doing its regeneration and repair work. Make sure you are getting at least 8 hours sleep a night and avoid keeping late hours. There is an old saying that an hours sleep before midnight is worth two hours after midnight. Learn stress releiving techniques if you feel uptight and have difficulty falling or staying asleep.
